So today I got my first official email from Kaitlin, aka Sister Hawkins! She sounds so happy and excited about the work she is doing. The days are long in the Training Center, but she says that she has never felt this happy or close to the Lord. She is learning to live with her companion 24 hours a day which involves some compromise, but that they love working together and have a lot of fun with the other missionaries in their group (called a District). There are 8 of them together in the class and they spend their days studying and practicing teaching lessons. She is still doing handstands (hopefully not in her skirt), making dolphin noises, and generally being herself, but she sounds so immersed in her studies of the Scriptures. I know that God is working in her heart and preparing her to teach those who are seeking to know about Jesus Christ. This will be the last email we get for a couple of weeks because she says that she will be leaving for Anaheim next Tuesday morning at 3:30am!! This week, she received a special blessing from one of the missionaries in her District because she was feeling a little discouraged and in the blessing it said, “Sister Hawkins things will not always go your way…but through Me you can accomplish anything!” I know this is true! Life may not always go the way that we wish it would or want it to, but with the Lord on our side, we can accomplish anything!
In 16 days my oldest child, Kaitlin will be leaving us for 18 months to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is something I have looked forward to and dreaded since she first told me she wanted to serve last February. It is a sacrifice for her and for us, but I have faith that we will all receive many tender mercies from the Lord during this adventure! I will be updating this blog weekly while she is serving and sharing the little miracles she finds each week. “But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty…” Please join our family on this new journey as we look for the tender mercies of the Lord in our daily lives.
